George Underwood

Born 1816, died 1859

One of the eight founders of Fort Hill Cemetery, George Underwood was a corporate lawyer, for many years associated with the Auburn and Syracuse Railroad Company. He was Mayor of Auburn in 1854. He was elected to the State Assembly in 1850 and 1851. Politics as such, however, were not to his taste. As he took his seat in the Assembly, he playfully remarked that he hoped to pass the winter in Albany without detriment to his morals or his patriotism. Hall's History of Auburn.

The Underwood lot is located in the Forest Lawn section.
